What belongs in a PCS moving pack for a move to Viera and Brevard County?

Start a PCS move to Brevard County by confirming your sponsor and in-processing steps with your gaining unit, then build a dated plan around your shipment, lodging allowance, lease or sale timing, and Florida vehicle paperwork. Choose a home only after you test the drive to Patrick Space Force Base or your assigned work site and verify every cost.

What should a PCS moving pack include for a move to Brevard County?

Keep one folder, paper or digital, with your orders and amendments, sponsor contacts, transportation office counseling notes, shipment dates, lodging receipts, lease or sale documents, vehicle titles and registrations, and a dated housing budget. Add your home search notes last. Orders drive nearly every other step, so a Viera home search should follow your report date and shipment plan, not lead it.

Who should you contact first after receiving orders to Patrick Space Force Base?

Start with your sponsor and gaining unit. The Patrick SFB sponsorship page on MilitaryINSTALLATIONS says newcomers without an assigned sponsor can contact their gaining unit's command support staff or the Patrick Military and Family Readiness Center at 321-494-5676 and ask for the relocation program manager. It also says your first stop after arriving is your unit's command support staff section.

The Patrick SFB relocation assistance page describes a PCS Loan Locker with basic dish packs, pots, pans, folding tables and chairs for inbound and outbound personnel, and a copy of your PCS orders is required to borrow items. That matters when your household goods arrive after you do. Build a personalized checklist with the Department of Defense Plan My Move tool from Military OneSource, then add the Brevard-specific items below.

How do household goods shipments and a personally procured move fit your timeline?

Get transportation office counseling before you lock in any closing, lease end or move-in date. The Military OneSource PCS moving FAQs explain the difference between a government-arranged household goods move and a personally procured move, and note that a partial PPM requires full and empty vehicle weight tickets. Your shipment is booked through the Defense Personal Property System either way.

The Air Force PCS benefits page advises against scheduling a lease termination or house sale closing on the same date your goods are packed, picked up or delivered, and says a PPM requires prior counseling and approval. Photograph your belongings before pickup and again at delivery so you have a record if you need to file a damage claim. Give your home closing a buffer of several days on each side of the delivery window so a late truck does not collide with your settlement appointment.

How long does temporary lodging expense cover a stay near your new duty station?

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service TLE page says temporary lodging expense is limited to 21 days for a move within the continental United States and is capped at $290 per day. It is authorized only near the old or new duty station and is not authorized for house hunting. Extensions in approved locations can reach 60 total days in 10-day increments.

Be honest with yourself about what 21 days can and cannot do. A financed purchase rarely goes from first showing to closing inside that window, so many inbound households either start the search remotely before arrival or rent first. If you are weighing those options, read whether to rent temporarily before buying in Viera and how to make an offer before seeing a Viera home in person. Confirm your own eligibility and amounts with your finance office, since entitlements depend on your orders and dependents.

How do you end a lease at your current duty station?

Federal law and some state laws give service members lease termination rights tied to PCS orders. The Department of Justice Servicemembers Civil Relief Act page explains that you give written notice with a copy of your orders or a commanding officer letter, and that for monthly rent the lease ends 30 days after the next rent payment is due.

If you are leaving a Florida rental, Florida Statute 83.682 also allows termination with at least 30 days written notice when PCS orders require a move of 35 miles or more, with rent prorated to the termination date. The same rule matters if you sign a lease in Brevard and later receive orders out. Ask your installation legal assistance office which law applies to your lease before sending notice.

Do you need a Florida driver license or a new registration after arriving?

Not automatically. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles military page says service members and their family members who live and drive in Florida may do so with a valid out-of-state driver license. If you do register a vehicle here, a qualifying service member, spouse or dependent child stationed in Florida on orders can claim an exemption from the $225 initial registration fee using form HSMV 82002 with a copy of the orders and a driver license.

Put vehicle titles, lienholder contact information and insurance cards in your moving pack. If a lender holds your title, ask early how it handles an out-of-state registration change, because that step can take longer than the office visit. Brevard County tax collector offices handle registration transactions, so check the location and appointment options before you go.

How should BAH figure into a Viera home budget?

Use your allowance as one input, not the budget itself. The Defense Travel Management Office BAH FAQ says BAH is based on pay grade, dependency status and duty station ZIP code, and that it is not intended to cover all housing costs. You can look up the current rate with the official BAH rate lookup.

In Viera, the monthly payment is only part of the cost. Add property tax, homeowners and possibly flood insurance, every association layer, any CDD assessment and utilities, then compare that total with your allowance and the length of your expected tour. The Viera costs, insurance, HOA and CDD guide walks through each line. Florida insurance has been expensive and harder to place than in many states, so get a quote on the exact address during your inspection period. If you plan to use VA financing, see buying a Viera home with an FHA or VA loan.

How do you test the drive from Viera to Patrick Space Force Base?

Viera is on the mainland and Patrick Space Force Base is on the barrier island, so the trip crosses the Indian River Lagoon on a causeway. Drive your exact route at the hours you will report and leave, including gate entry time, before choosing a home. A map estimate at midday will not match a launch-day backup or a bridge closure.

Use this Viera commute test and the daily life and commutes page, which covers routes to Kennedy Space Center and Patrick Space Force Base. If your assignment is at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station instead, test that route separately since the drive differs.

What else belongs in the folder for an out-of-state Viera purchase?

Add a list of the professionals you will rely on from a distance: lender, closing office, inspector, insurance agent and mover. Read how remote closings work in Viera and how to verify a moving company if you are hiring movers for anything outside your government shipment. Protect closing funds by confirming wire instructions by phone with a number you already trust.

Once you have keys, the first 30 days in Viera checklist covers utilities, address changes and association setup. The Viera move-planning roadmap pulls the whole relocation together.

PCS move to Brevard County questions

Can you start a Viera home search before you arrive?

Yes. Many buyers review homes by live video, check property records and line up financing before their report date, then confirm details in person if timing allows.

Does the Patrick Military and Family Readiness Center help with off-base housing?

It offers relocation counseling, sponsorship help and settling-in support. Ask the relocation program manager at 321-494-5676 what is currently available for your move.

Should you buy or rent on a short tour?

It depends on tour length, resale and rental costs, and whether you could rent the home later. Run both scenarios with your lender and a tax adviser before deciding.
